“WAITING” is the longest red light in the world that interrupts our dash to the greatest place in the world. Waiting is the pause that brings everything to a screeching halt. It stands at the crossroads of “I cannot do this!” and “JESUS can!”. It is not the intersection of our choosing, but is necessary for our growth and maturity. There are many scriptures in the Bible that instruct us on the waiting phase of our Christian journey. To mention a few:
“I wait for the LORD, my soul does wait, and in his word do I hope.” Psalm 130:5
“Our soul waits for the LORD: he is our help and our shield.” Psalm 33:20
“Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.” Psalm 27:14
Sometimes, our stronger spiritual self must encourage our weaker human self to WAIT! It is a tough holding pattern as we expect the answer, the remedy to all things, immediately. The Lord works on HIS own perfectly timed schedule so the answers coincide with the moment that will do the most good in our lives and bring the most glory to HIM. It’s okay. HE deserves the time to work everything out according to HIS plan. HE deserves our patience because HE will never do anything to harm us. He deserves our patience because HE loves us more than anyone ever possibly could. HE deserves our patience because even in the “Waiting” there are lessons to be learned.
So, if the Lord has you on pause, there is a purpose. Maybe, HE has you waiting until you understand there is nothing you can do to change the light to “green”. No amount of hoping, wishing, favor or manipulation will get you on the road again until God says “Go!”. Maybe HE is teaching you to be fully reliant on HIM. Maybe HE sees you need the break. Maybe HE knows you are too impatient for your own good so HE sent the “Waiting” to teach you patience.
In this waiting phase, know that you know, God is not sleeping. HE has not taken a break but is working on your behalf. Just listen and watch. Don’t get in a hurry, run the red light and get broadsided. Don’t relax so much your engine dies because you need to be ready to move when the light changes. HE may direct you to move up a bit or even move over to allow others to turn right on red. Try not to lay on the horn. It tends to make one more anxious.
For the past several months, I have been “Waiting….”. There has been plenty going on around me. Many distractions have come and gone through my waiting phase. Other folks have come and gone on by. Their lives only paused briefly then the Lord gave them the go-ahead. Me? Still waiting. The lessons have been myriad and varied. The constant has been the Lord’s faithfulness and HIS grace.
“Lord, I’m waiting. I cannot do this on my own. YOU are the Great Physician on my assurance network. YOU placed me here for reasons known to YOU and only revealed to me according YOUR will. Thank YOU for keeping me company every day. Thank YOU for comforting me in times of pain. Thank YOU for speaking peace to my frustration. Thank YOU for calming each storm. Thank YOU for keeping me. I know the answer is on it’s way to me and I thank YOU for putting up with me during the wait. Thank YOU for remembering me and loving me through it all. YOU are faithful and YOUR grace is sufficient! ALWAYS!!”
